Building a Custom Home

Sometimes, no home on the market is right. You and you partner may have been looking to upgrade your home for years but can't find exactly what you both want. There could be a home that works, but it would take too much demolition and remodeling work to get it where you want it to be. At the same time, you could be in for more remodeling costs than the home is even worth!

When all else fails, building a custom home becomes your best option. There are countless builders that can help your dream home become a reality. From conception to building, there's a lot of work that goes into building your very own home. Let's look at some of the things you can expect when you choose to build a custom home:

Meet the Team

The first thing you want to do is explore your options. There are probably countless builders in your area capable of building your new home. But just like the right home, there's a right builder for you. It's a good idea to contact more than one company - exploring what options and incentives they offer. You want to make sure they’re easy to work with and willing to put your needs first so you get what you want.

After you've decided on the best builder for you, you can start touring some model homes and possible build-sites. You can either choose to build your home in a new community or on your own piece of land. Either way, you'll want to see what they have to offer. Being comfortable with their skills and style from the beginning will help the process move along.

Decide on a Design

After you've seen the models, you can choose the floor plan you like best. Each floor plan is a different cost, but your builder should give you plenty to choose from to fit your budget and needs. You'll also be able to choose your finishes. One of the best things about building a custom home is your ability to have you hand in all things.

From the appliances to flooring, you can choose what you like best. No detail is left to chance - even the smallest items can be customized to meet your needs. You do have more guidelines to follow when you're building in a community rather than independently, but the sky is the limit when it comes to high-end finishes.

Site Prep

From here on out, the process is largely out of your hands. This is where the builder really steps in to do their part. Even though the process may seem like a breeze, they have to coordinate a lot of moving pieces. From raw material made useable by a rock crusher to the lumber used to create the frame, a lot of work goes into building a home.

They'll start with breaking ground on your plot and pouring the foundation of your home. Then, things like framing, mechanical, electrical, and insulation happen. Your home starts to look like something you can live in! After that come lots of inspections, codes, and finishing touches to the foundation of your new home.

Interior Work

After the foundation and exterior of your home is built and up to code, your builder will begin working on the inside. At this point, your home looks like an incomplete shell. Things like drywall, trim, flooring, and doors need to be added to create a livable space. The fun really beings when you start to see the inside come together!

Then, before you know it, it's time to move in! You may have put a lot of time and efforts into getting all the details right, but you have your builder to thank for putting in the hard work. Sometimes, you really can build your dream home!
